I heard this story today on Discover the Word and thought it would good to share as we finish the week.
My son is a gifted athlete and student. When I asked him recently how his day had been, he just grunted. I asked him what happened and he said “I flunked my gym test”. I said “Mark you are one of the best athletes in the school, how do you flunk a gym test?” He said “we had to go out and run a mile and do it in twelve minutes”. I said “Mark you could walk a mile in twelve minutes. There is something going on here what are you not telling me?” He said “Never mind it’s not a big deal”. I said no tell me what happened. Mark then told me the story. “There is a kid in my class who is really overweight so he can’t run. He was way behind everyone else, he wasn’t even going to make it. So I dropped back and ran along beside him. We both flunked the test.”
The apostle Paul talks about this willingness to suffer loss to encourage others in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
“ All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. “
This is what our God did for us. Jesus came along-side us in our struggles and offered encouragement, comfort and hope. Is there someone you know today that you could come offer encouragement and comfort to?
