He’s Coming Back

christ will return 4

On that day, with a command that thunders into the world, with a voice of a chief heavenly messenger, and with a blast of God’s trumpet, the Lord Himself will descend from heaven.

For we can say all this to you confidently because it is the word of the Lord: we who are still alive and left behind when the Lord comes will not precede those who have fallen asleep in death.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-16

We most often read this passage from 1 Thessalonians at funerals. These words written by the apostle Paul have given comfort and hope throughout the ages, a promise for those who remain that at some future time they will be reunited with their loved ones who die in the Lord Jesus. There is another promise in this that gives even greater hope

He’s coming back.

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” John 14:1-3

I will come and get you…

I love this. When I was a child and my parents would make a promise I knew they would keep it. When I was a teenager and got into a little trouble requiring my Dad to come pick me up from the police station, I knew that when he said “I will come and get you” I was absolutely confident he would.

We can have that same confidence in Jesus promise,  “I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

Chuck Swindoll writes:  If He comes for us at the end of our existence here on earth or if He comes suddenly at the end of the age, make no mistake scripture promises He will return.

“But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along.” 2 Peter 3:10-12

For those who believe and have put their faith in Jesus Christ, His return will be a time of great joy and reunion. I often think “Come Lord Jesus” but then I remember those who have not yet trusted in Him, some in my family. While there is still time pray for them.

Are you ready for His return?

  1. “He’s coming back.”

I really like this post. Anytime I see that passage I can almost see a debate coming right on it’s coattails. But you really hit the important thing, and the thing that is clear no matter what you might think about what the rest is saying. The overriding point is He is coming back. The whens and wheres can be argued, but not the fact of it.

    Thanks for this.

  2. messagefromthefield,
He is indeed coming back for us. He is faithful in all his promises. You’ve made it clear that in the meantime we need to be praying for those who have not put their trust in the Lord. I believe He is coming back soon, so it is incumbent on us to give our testimony of what Jesus has done for us, to people who don’t know Him. I’m trying to make this my main priority for the remainder of my life. God bless!
