Wilderness

wilderness 2

In this dry and weary land with no water in sight,

O True God, You are my God, the One whom I trust.
I seek You with every fiber of my being.
In this dry and weary land with no water in sight,
my soul is dry and longs for You.
My body aches for You, for Your presence.
I have seen You in Your sanctuary
and have been awed by Your power and glory.
Your steadfast love is better than life itself,
so my lips will give You all my praise.
I will bless You with every breath of my life;
I will lift up my hands in praise to Your name.

Psalms 63:1-4

This Psalm was written by David in the wilderness of Judah as he was pursued by his son Absalom who wanted to kill him and establish himself as king.

David had been here before, waging warfare valiantly for Saul, using his musical gifts to soothe him when he was attacked by evil spirits, hunted by Saul like an animal. And now because of events driven by his affair with Bathsheba by his own son Absalom

Davids thoughts were not focused on his enemies or his situation but towards God, because David understood only God as He had before could sustain him during this difficult time.

O God You are the one I trust

I seek you with every fiber of my being

I ache for You more than I desire water physical relief from my problems…

David sought spiritual refreshment because he knew God’s majesty and power

I have seen You in your sanctuary

I have been in awe of Your power and glory

Your steadfast love is better than even life itself

David understood that in the end it would be God who would provide relief and escape from his troubles. And even if God did not,

My lips will give You all my praise

I will lift up my hands in praise to Your name

We see from this account of David’s life, principles we can apply to our own story. Trouble comes when we have done no wrong, trouble comes when we have. It should comfort us to know that God will meet us in our wilderness no matter how we got there. And when we remember who He is, and call on Him He will forgive, save, deliver us!

With David we can say

“O true God, the one whom I trust,

I seek You with every fiber of my being

I will bless You with every breath of my life.

Amen! deliverance
