New Clothes

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self,

Which is being corrupted by deceitful desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
– Ephesians 4:22-24

I like new clothes.
A new pair of jeans, a new shirt, the crisp feel and smell of the material.
But sometimes new clothes are uncomfortable.
The same can be said of our new life that Paul talks about in Eph. 4.
Sometimes it’s uncomfortable and our desire for the comfort of the old ways is tempting.
Paul speaks of the need to get rid of the old ways, the old thoughts, old habits, old attitudes.
But that alone is not enough.
They have to be replaced with new thoughts, new attitudes, new ways.
I struggle with the old ways more than I would care to admit.
Anger, insecurity, jealousy, sinful thoughts.
Giving in to the old ways justifying, making excuses.

But I have help.
God is working through the Holy Spirit to renew my mind and attitude. And I have responsibility to say no to the old things that once defined me.
Refusing to put them back on, or let them back in.
And even though growth brings a certain amount of discomfort, the new it brings is designed to last for eternity.
New clothes, a new life that will never fade away or wear out.
