But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God….
Think about what it means to believe.
We get into a car, on a bus, train or airplane and give little thought to whether we will arrive at our destination.
We order from Amazon and other online businesses and have little doubt if any it will arrive.
Countless times in our lives we make decisions believing that based on the information we have that the outcome will be favorable.
But the most important thing we will ever believe is difficult to accept for many. Some reject it outright.
In the area of the United States where I live there are many homeless children. Some literally without shelter and care, many separated from their birth parents for various reasons. For these children having a safe home where they are provided for, food, clothing, love and care is the most important thing.
And It is no different you and I. We want to be assured we are someones child no matter how old we might be. That there is someone who when we are afraid of the dark is looking out for us. That will care for us, has our ultimate good in mind, that loves us.
John introducing Jesus does exactly that. He assures us that the reason Jesus came was not to judge or point out our obvious state of brokenness. No John makes it clear that the mission Jesus was on was to offer all the homeless children, separated from their Father who loves them a way back home. No strings, no pre-qualifying, not earning a place at the table. Only one thing was required.
For God so loved the world that He gave his Son. That whoever would believe in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
