Born Alive

Infanticide has existed throughout history…

Aborting babies is not a new thing in our culture, but has been rampant in even cultures past.

The early Christians lived in a society where infanticide and even child sacrifice was legal. But Christians, transformed by the life of Christ, began to live out something different.  When the Romans left their unwanted babies in the forest, the Christians went into the forests and rescued those babies. They cared for THE people, not just THEIR people. They sacrificed their own comfort, their own security; they laid down their rights for the sake of those in need of rescue. When you see someone drowning, you don’t wait for a comfortable boat to come along and slowly row out to get them, you don’t write a blog post on how to swim, you don’t stand at the edge of the water and shout this is how you survive. You GO. You run into the water with all your might and then you swim with all your might, with no thought to anything but I must rescue this person, risking your own life so that another may live. This is the way of the cross.  This is the way of the people of the cross.*

On Monday the Senate will do a roll call vote on the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.” Senator Sasse had this to say,

“A lot of Senators spend a lot of time telling people how they fight for the little guy. Well, here’s the chance for them to prove it. We’re going to have a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and everyone is going to have to put their name by their vote. It’s cowardly for a politician to say they’ll fight for the little guy but only if the little guy isn’t an actual seven-pound baby who’s fighting for life. It shouldn’t be hard to protect newborn babies – let’s pass this legislation.”

To me it is unconscionable that a vote is even needed to protect the life of a child born alive through a botched abortion. Yet here we are and I suspect there will be those in the Senate chamber on Monday who will vote against it. It is not a given it will pass.

In the end everyone will give an account for their actions here on earth. For those of us who proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior I’m more afraid we will give an account for what we did not do than what we did. Where is the outrage, the protests in Washington that usually accompany the great issues of our time? I mean no disrespect towards civil rights, the mistreatment of Native Americans or even injustice we see in many areas of our nation but, this is a bigger issue than any of these. This is a basic right to life issue regardless of color, nationality or gender. Martin Luther King Jr. was correct in his statement ““Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

So I would challenge you on Monday February 25th (and before) if your heart tells you this is wrong, that taking the life of babies inside or outside the womb is at least unjust, and at it greatest criminal, do something. Email, call your House and Senate representative and let them know you stand with or in some cases against them in this fight for life. Spread the word to all that you know.

And pray.

Pray like you were praying for the life of the children you have or for those yet to come. This devaluing of life will not stop here. Left unchecked evil grows and devours and in recent times we have seen through the concentration camps of Auschwitz what it looks like unchecked. The old, the disabled, those with mental and physical disabilities, those who do not fit the profile of acceptable. Our choice is clear. We must speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
